·   Document cameras, also known as visual presenters, visualizers, digital overheads, or docucams, are real-time image capture devices for displaying an object to a large audience.

·    A document camera is able to magnify and project the images of actual, three-dimensional objects, as well as transparencies.

·     This allows a teacher, lecturer or presenter to write on a sheet of paper or to display a two or three-dimensional object while the audience watches.

·   Theoretically, all objects can be displayed by a document camera. Most objects are simply placed under the camera.

·       The camera takes the picture which in turn produces a live picture using a projector or monitor.

·      Different types of document camera/visualizer allow great flexibility in terms of placement of objects. Larger objects, for example, can simply be placed in front of the camera and the camera rotated as necessary, or a ceiling mounted document camera can also be used to allow a larger working area to be used.

·       Many will know a classroom visualiser by a different name – over-head projectors or OHP for short. It can be used for displaying 3-D objects, documents, text books, slides, maps, charts and acetates.

THE USE OF A VISUALIZER WITH AN IWB HAS THE POTENTIAL TO:

·         Show an object or demonstration clearly to the whole class

·         Make the whole class teaching more time 'efficient' and focused

·         Support collaborative thinking and dialogic discussion

·         Improve pupil understanding of a process

BENEFITS OF USING A VISUALISER

In general, a visualiser allows the students to see what the teachers would want to display more clearly.  Besides, it also allows the teachers to explain and demonstrate the projected image simultaneously. The benefits of visualisers are detailed below:

a)  BRING LESSONS TO LIFE

        i)  ZOOMING IN & OUT

·     The capability of visualisers to zoom in and out and project the reflection of living things put under the tool on to the screen is exciting and real.

·       This becomes very beneficial, especially during science lessons, but this does not mean it is useless in language lessons.

·     During language lessons, teachers can use the visualiser to project a living thing, or other materials, documents or objects as stimuli for students in a writing task.

        ii)  FUNCTIONS OF VISUALISER

·    It can be connected to a monitor or digital projector and all the class can see the target object.

·   When connected to a PC that runs visualiser software, more opportunities present themselves. For example, slow motion, time-lapse capture, storage and review of any 2D/3D object, split-screen operation and mirrored images, B&W and negative imaging and video casting.

·         If the PC is connected to an interactive whiteboard, then annotation of 3D objects becomes possible.

   b)  PROMOTE INTERACTIVE LESSONS

·         The multi-functionality of a visualiser can assist students to improve their language skills.  For example, teachers can always ask students to present their findings or homework using the tool to the whole class.  This will indirectly help them to improve their speaking skills.  To those who are listening, this can improve their listening skills as listening to classmates can be a very interesting session.

THE STEPS HAVE TO BE ADOPTED FOR VISUALIZING (VISUAL PROJECTOR)

Step 1:

Connect the visual projector to the switch board.

Step 2:

A Visual projector has lens and places the book or notebook below the lens.

Step 3:

Connect the visual projector to the LCD projector.

Step 4:

After switching on, the visual projector displays the book content or notebook content on the LCD projector and shows the content to the whole class. The page in that document or book can be visualized for the whole class.

NOTE:

There is no need for a computer/laptop for connecting to the visual projector.

SKILL ACQUISITION:

Under the guidance of our teacher-educator, I have learnt to use the visual projector in order to project information and share it with the whole class. In this way, I have acquired the knowledge of how to handle the visual projector.

7. To use a mobile device/ a camera phone to take a series of snapshots of children’s actions events/scenes/activities and prepare a photo documentary or photo album with explanatory notes/ descriptions.

PREPARE A PHOTO DOCUMENTARY OR PHOTO ALBUM

·    A photographic album or photo album is a series of photographic prints collected by an individual person or family in the form of a book. Photo albums are the perfect way to store, organize, and proudly show the pictures you value most.

·    Digital photo albums are incredibly convenient. We can store thousands of photos on a single device and access them from anywhere with an internet connection.
